Nervecentre V8.1 Help for Users
About referrals
Clinicians and GPs can refer a patient to a service, for example, if a patient has a skin condition they can refer the patient to a dermatology clinic.
Your organisation can receive these referrals as letters, emails, or from e-RS Electronic Referral Service. Used by GPs/patients to book initial appointments with specialists at a convenient time. This would replace the current system where a referral is made to the specialist who then sends out a letter with an appointment – if the patient can’t attend that appointment they’ll have to call back and rearrange.. If you receive a letter for a referral, you can add that referral to Nervecentre. If your organisation receives a referral by e-RS, Nervecentre automatically adds that referral.
Nervecentre shares appointment slots for bookable services with e-RS. When a GP refers a patient to a bookable service, the GP can book an appointment for the patient.
GPs can also request advice and guidance from clinicians in your organisation. Nervecentre can receive these advice and guidance requests from e-RS.

You can manually add referrals to Nervecentre. You might do this when:
-
A GP sends a referral letter to you
You can use the details on the referral letter to add the referral to Nervecentre.
-
Another organisation sends you a referral letter
This is an Inter Provider Transfer (IPT). You can use the details on the letter to add the referral to Nervecentre.

A GP can log in to e-RS to send referrals, or advice and guidance requests, to service providers. Nervecentre can receive referrals, and advice and guidance requests, from e-RS.
When a GP refers a patient using e-RS, they can:
-
Book an appointment, if they are referring the patient to a bookable service
-
Send the referral to a Referral Assessment Service (RAS)
A clinician reviews or triages the referral.
-
Request advice and guidance from a clinician
A clinician can send back advice, or convert the request into a referral.

Nervecentre shares appointment slots for bookable services with e-RS. When a GP refers a patient to a bookable service, the GP can view that service's appointment slots and book the patient an appointment. This process is called direct booking.

A service might not have any appointment slots available. For example, all the available slots could be booked, or there might be no slots created for dates more than 3 months ahead. These are called Appointment Slot Issues (ASI). If a service has appointment slot issues, the GP can place the referral on to a worklist in e-RS. This is called deferring the referral.
Nervecentre can show you the list of referrals to services with appointment slot issues. Clinicians can review these referrals and choose whether to book an appointment for the patient. If a clinician thinks the referral is not needed, they can send the referral back to the GP through e-RS.

When a GP refers a patient to a service, they can send the referral to a Referral Assessment Service (RAS). A clinician then reviews or triages the referral.
Nervecentre receives referrals that need review from e-RS. Clinicians can view these referrals in Nervecentre and choose whether to book an appointment. If a clinician thinks the referral is not needed, they can send the referral back to the GP through e-RS.

You can manually add external referrals, for example, a referral you receive from a GP, or an inbound IPT Inter Provider Transfer. A referral is transferred from one healthcare provider to another healthcare provider. referral.
