About urgent and emergency care

Nervecentre Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) covers visits to:

'Emergency department' areas, or ED areas

These areas can be in emergency departments, urgent treatment centres, urgent care centres, and minor injury units. These areas handle acute and non-acute medical emergencies, and they have a four hour target.
Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)

These areas aim to complete treating patients without a hospital admission or overnight stay. These areas don't have a four hour target.

You can manage patients in UEC from  Inpatients.

Example workflow for ED areas

The workflow you follow depends on your organisation.

Below is an example workflow for patients visiting ED areas 'Emergency department' areas. These areas can be in emergency departments, urgent treatment centres, urgent care centres, and minor injury units. These areas handle acute and non-acute medical emergencies, and they have a four hour target.. This includes emergency departments, urgent treatment centres, urgent care centres, and minor injury units.

	A patient arrives at UEC. If you: Have the patient's information You can search for the patient in Nervecentre. If the patient isn't registered in Nervecentre, you can register the patient. Read about registering a patient Don't have the patient's information For example, the patient is unconscious, and has no ID. You can register the patient as an unknown patient. 	If you were: Expecting the patient For example, the patient called UEC, arrived by ambulance, or called NHS 111. You can find the patient's preadmission and record the patient's attendance. Read about attending a patient who has a preadmission Not expecting the patient You can record the patient's attendance. A clinician can complete a streaming form with the patient to work out where the patient needs to go. Read about attending a patient Read about streaming
	Streaming decides where the patient needs to go. If the patient needs to: Stay in an ED area You can transfer the patient to a waiting area to wait for triage. After triage, you can transfer the patient to a new area and location. Read about calling a patient from a waiting area Read about triage Read about transferring patients between areas Go to SDEC You can depart the patient, then preadmit them to SDEC. Read about departing a patient Read about preadmitting patients Go home You can depart the patient from UEC, and add notes for the patient's GP. Read about departing a patient
	Clinicians care for the patient, and complete clerking forms when needed. Read about clinical care and monitoring Read about clerking
	If the patient needs to be admitted to an inpatient ward, you can complete the Decision To Admit (DTA) form, and request a bed for the patient. You must depart the patient from UEC before you can admit them to an inpatient ward. Read about recording a decision to admit Read about admitting patients to inpatient wards
	If the patient is clinically ready to proceed, you can depart the patient. Depending on the patient's condition, you might admit the patient to a virtual ward, preadmit the patient to SDEC, or send the patient home. Read about admitting patients to virtual wards Read about preadmitting patients

Example workflow for SDEC

The workflow you follow depends on your organisation.

Below is an example workflow for patients visiting SDEC Same Day Emergency Care. These areas aim to complete treating patients without a hospital admission or overnight stay. These areas don't have a four hour target..

	If the patient: Was referred to SDEC from a GP or NHS 111 You can search for the patient, and register them if needed. You can then attend the patient to SDEC. Read about registering a patient Read about attending a patient to SDEC Is reattending SDEC, or was streamed to SDEC You can find the patient's preadmission to SDEC and attend them to SDEC. 	Clinicians complete the triage form and care for the patient. They complete the clerking form. Read about triage Read about clinical care and monitoring Read about clerking
	If treatment is: Complete You depart the patient from SDEC and send them home. Read about departing a patient from SDEC Not complete You need to decide if the patient is returning to SDEC later.
	If the patient is: Returning to SDEC later You depart the patient from SDEC, then preadmit the patient to SDEC.
