Dispensing outpatient medications

You can choose how outpatient medications are dispensed. You can:

  • Print a prescription form

For example, in England this is an FP10. You give the form to the patient. The patient gives the form to a pharmacy. The pharmacy dispenses the medication. The patient collects the medication from the pharmacy.

  • Send the prescription to the hospital pharmacy

Pharmacists in the hospital pharmacy dispense the medication. The patient collects the medication from the hospital pharmacy.

  • Send the prescription to a community pharmacy

Depending on your organisation, you can send prescriptions to community pharmacies using the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). EPS is only available in England.

The patient can nominate a community pharmacy. The community pharmacy dispenses the medication. The patient collects the medication from the community pharmacy.

The options available depend on your organisation. Your organisation decides how a medication can be dispensed.

You can also print a list of medications or an individual medication from the outpatient prescription list. For example, you might need to print a medication from the list, if the medication is a controlled drug you must physically sign for.
