A data field is an item in the Nervecentre database. For example ‘Heart Rate’, or ‘Haemoglobin’.
The Nervecentre database might contain data fields with similar names, but the data for each field comes from different sources. Each data field has a unique identifying code. For example, you might have two data fields for haemoglobin: one data field for haemoglobin results from lab tests, and another data field for haemoglobin results from blood gas analysers.

A series contains data from one or more data fields. A series can only contain one type of data field, for example, only observations, or only medications.
All series are shared between all users. Any changes to a series affects all charts that use the series.

The type of a series depends on the type of data fields the series contains. A series can only contain one type of data field.
Type | Sub-type | Description |
---|---|---|
Obs | Observations |
The series can contain one or more observation items. For example, heart rate or blood pressure. You can display the data in a line graph, in categorised graph, in lanes, or in a table. The options available for displaying the data depend on the data field. |
Lab Results | Lab Results |
The series can contain one or more data fields from Nervecentre Investigations. You can display the data in a line graph, in lanes, or in a table. |
Medications | Medication |
The series can contain one or more VTMs Virtual Therapeutic Moiety. A representation of active medicinal ingredient. Information on indication, strength, dose or administration route are not included. from Nervecentre EPMA. You can display the data in lanes or in a table. If you display the data in lanes, Nervecentre displays a lane for each route and specialist formulation. You can't show fluids given as an infusion, and medications prescribed when the patient was not an inpatient. |
Medications | Drug classification |
The series can contain one or more BNF British National Formulary. The BNF aims to provide prescribers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals with sound up-to-date information about the use of medicines. It includes key information on the selection, prescribing, dispensing, and administration of medicines. Medicines generally prescribed in the UK are covered and those considered less suitable for prescribing are clearly identified. drug classifications from Nervecentre EPMA. You can display the data in lanes or in a table. If you display the data in a lane graph, Nervecentre displays a lane for each route and specialist formulation. |
Case Notes | Case Notes |
The series can contain one or more encounter types. This includes interventions, cases, and appointments. You can display the data in lanes or in a table. When you display a case on a chart, you only see when users created cases, and not when users created encounters in those cases. |
Tasks | Tasks |
The series can contain one or more tasks. You can display the data in lanes or in a table. |
Fluids | Fluids |
The series can contain one or more data fields from Nervecentre Fluid Balance. You can display the data in a line graph, a stacked bar chart, or a table. |

You can aggregate data in a series. This can help users when they are viewing the data on a chart.
For example, Erika is a clinician and she records a patient's heart rate every hour. Erika views the patient's heart rate in a chart. For the series 'Heart rate', you set the aggregation method to 'Average (min/max)'. When she views the patient's heart rate over the past day, she can mouseover a data point to view the patient's heart rate at that time. When she views the patient's heart rate over a week, she can mouseover a time period to view the patient's average heart rate, minimum heart rate, and maximum heart rate during that time period.
When you edit the properties of a series, you can choose how Nervecentre aggregates the data in the series.
If you aggregate data with incompatible units using an average or sum method, Nervecentre displays an error when you view the data in a chart. For example, incompatible units would be grams and milligrams.
Aggregation method | Behaviour |
---|---|
None |
No aggregation. We recommend you don't use this because the lack of aggregation might appear strange to users. |
Sum (min/max) |
Users can mouseover a time period to view the sum of the values, the minimum value, and the maximum value over that time period. If the data is in a table, the sum of the values over that time period is shown in the table. |
Average (min/max) |
Users can mouseover a time period to view the average of the values, the minimum value, and the maximum value over that time period. If the data is in a table, the average of the values over that time period is shown in the table. |
Count |
Users can mouseover a time period to number of measurements in that time period. If the data is in a table, the number of measurements in that time period is shown in the table. |
Average (count values) |
Users can mouseover a time period to view the average of the values, and a count of each value over that time period. For example, three 5s and two 4s over an hour. If the data is in a table, the average of the values over that time period is shown in the table. |
Sum (count values) |
Users can mouseover a time period to view the sum of the values, and a count of each value over that time period. For example, three 5s and two 4s over an hour. If the data is in a table, the sum of the values over that time period is shown in the table. |
Average (count measurements) |
Users can mouseover a time period to view the average of the values, and the number of measurements over that time period. If the data is in a table, the average of the values over that time period is shown in the table. |
